My baby can read!

So in January we received a monthly newsletter from preschool letting us know that the push for teaching the kids to read was heading into full swing. Most of the children in Maddox's class are heading to kindergarten in the fall, but as his birthday is past the Sept 1 cutoff, Maddox will have another year of preschool. Reading, tho? He's barely 4!

The teachers have sent "books" home for the children to practice reading on. By "books", I mean photocopied pages with pictures stapled together to form a book. Anyway, once the children get comfortable enough reading their assigned book, they are expected to take the book back to class & read it to the teacher. If successful, the child trades the book in for a more challenging book.

The book Maddox got a couple of weeks ago consisted of the following words:
Pet Day (Title)
a dog (page 1)
a cat (page 2)
a fish (page 3)
a mouse (page 4)

Well, this morning Maddox had the opportunity to test his skills with Mrs. Kristi. Although I didn't have a chance to talk w/ her & get details, I did see a sticky note w/ "Great job, Maddox!" on it and a new book that looks about 3x the size. I'm so proud of my new little reader :)

That is awesome news. Such a fun stage to experience...wait until when you are driving around town and he starts reading all the signs on the stores and such. : )
