Baby steps & goals

So once again Teague and I had a discussion about how our will power for unhealthy treats is disappointing us.  We have these discussions often, sadly.  The main culprit at this point is Halloween candy.  It's shameful to admit we purchase candy for ourselves as well as candy to pass out to others.  We have also been known to hesitate when we run out of candy to pass out to the children and have to (gasp!) break open our precious stash.  Of course now that a couple of weeks have passed, the guilt over our sugar intake is too great to ignore.

Another glaring sign happened at a Mom's Group last Thursday when the Life Coach guest speaker focused on healthy living, specifically on the blood sugar levels that are ideal on a daily basis.  Luckily I was given a handout showing countless healthy snacks (mostly vegetarian) that would keep my body at the right levels.  Based on this discussion, my biggest mistake is not eating at the right time; by example, I would eat around 8:30am, then not again until 1:30pm or 2pm and dinner at 6pm (with many snacks sprinkled throughout).  It was time to make a change.

It is easy to say that Teague and I would throw out all the Halloween candy in the house along with all other junk food, but that just isn't going to happen.  I don't like to throw away good food (and Twix is oh-so-good) and besides, the kids worked hard for their booty.

After bouncing some ideas off of each other, we made a pact that neither of us would purchase any candy or chips (a huge vice for us) until Thanksgiving.  I know you find this a ridiculous goal, but we are suckers for a good deal and have no problems sneaking late-night salty snacks while watching the DVR on weekends.  Thanksgiving is still 2.5 weeks away and it's may be tough, but definitely achievable.  I am very good at sticking to a particular goal, but I'm careful in the details to ensure it's something I can actually do.  That doesn't mean that is the only good choice we are making, but we have promised that at least.  I will also be doing my best to eat small healthy snacks every 3 hours as opposed to just when I feel hungry.

Wish us luck!
